ENGLISH HISTORY
of word from ETYMONLINE.COM

Tartarus (n.) in Homer and older Greek mythology, the sunless abyss below Hades, from Greek Tartaros, of uncertain origin; "prob. a word of imitative origin, suggestive of something frightful" [Klein]. Later in Greek almost synonymous with Hades.
      Added note in etymonline.com:
Iapetus a titan, son of Uranus and Gaia; Latinized form of Greek Iapetos, which is of uncertain origin. It has been connected with biblical Japheth or with Greek iaptein "to put forth, send forth" (perhaps as "the one thrown" by Zeus into Tartaros" or "the one who throws" a spear, etc.). Beekes finds these improbable and suggests that, as the name of a pre-Olympian god, it is a Pre-Greek word.

______________________

My Comment on Thayer's (gw). Thayer gives the Gehenna explanation as an interpretive comment and not its definition. Greek Gehenna (hell) seems to me to actually refer to the everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:41) following the resurrection at Christ's return. The rich man and Lazarus parable (Luke 16:19f) tells of the uncharitable rich man being separated in death (in Hades) where he is tormented in flames before the resurrection since he mentions his five brothers were still living (v.28). And the angels that sinned are said to be currently in a place called Tartarus according to 2 Peter 2:4. Yet, Tartarus is definitely similar to Gehenna. It definitely can be identified as equivalent or a precursor to final Gehenna since both were prepared originally for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41 and 2 Peter 2:4) and there is torment with the same pain and punishment. Finally, Hebrews 9:27 does place judgment (the ultimate crisis for us all) after death.
